Plan an Art Print Buying Budget from Your Display Capacity

Create an art print buying budget from visible positions, unit depth, back-stock space, current wholesale costs, and a protected reorder reserve.

The short answer: budget backward from the display. Count the positions customers can see, decide how many units each position can support, check current wholesale costs, and keep part of the budget uncommitted for reorders. This ties inventory dollars to a real selling plan.

Measure selling capacity

Record four numbers:

  1. Front-facing wall or tabletop positions
  2. Clearly browsable bin or divider positions
  3. Protected back-stock capacity
  4. Number of theme groups the customer can understand

A store with eight wall positions and four bin dividers does not automatically need dozens of designs. It needs enough designs and units to make those twelve positions useful, plus a controlled reserve.

Build the budget in layers

Budget layer Purpose
Core display Fills the visible positions with the store's strongest-fit themes
Test layer Adds a small number of discovery designs with a defined learning goal
Back stock Supports replenishment only where storage and expected velocity justify it
Reorder reserve Keeps money available for proven winners instead of committing everything up front

The exact percentages depend on the business, season, and supplier minimums. The discipline is to name the layers before allocating the dollars.

A clear nature anchor can earn a core-display position; adjacent designs can be shallower tests until sell-through proves the theme.

Use current landed cost

Wholesale price is one input. Also consider the shipping and handling information shown in the channel, any supplies or labor needed before display, and the risk of damage or storage. Do not copy an old price or promotion into the plan. Review current details in Faire when the cart is ready.

This article does not prescribe a retail price or margin. Use your own pricing policy, current costs, local market, and business requirements.

A capacity-first example

Imagine a store has six front-facing positions and two four-section browse bins. The buyer might define three themes, give each one an anchor, assign companions to the bins, and hold a small reserve for the first reorder. The plan starts with the number of useful positions, then applies current unit costs and minimums. It does not begin with “spend the entire budget.”

Concrete examples make the fixture plan easier to test before checkout. A vertical Aert Schouman star bittern print and an antique natural-history fish print available in vertical or horizontal formats help a buyer ask whether the planned positions support the actual orientations being considered. Treat these as planning examples, then use current wholesale details when building the order.

Protect reorder capacity

A first order can reveal a winner quickly. If every available dollar is tied up in slow or untested inventory, the store cannot respond. Keep a reorder reserve and define the evidence that releases it: a unit threshold, sell-through rate, customer waitlist, or repeated staff request.

Review the budget after arrival

  • Did the shipment fit the planned display and storage?
  • Were extra materials or labor required?
  • Which themes earned attention and sales?
  • Which sizes were easiest to display and explain?
  • How much reserve remains for the first reorder?

Carry the answers into the next buy. A capacity-first budget becomes more useful each time the store records what the display actually supported.
