How Museum Stores Can Build an Art Print Assortment

By Rock Paper Scissors

Plan an art print assortment for a museum store using collection relevance, visitor interests, giftability, educational context, display capacity, and measured reordering.

In this article

  1. Start with the institutional connection
  2. Use three assortment layers
  3. Make context visible
  4. Balance mission and giftability
  5. Plan for exhibition transitions
  6. Measure the assortment
  7. Curate a museum-store assortment

The short answer: a museum-store print assortment should connect clearly to the institution while still working as a gift and home-decor purchase. Begin with collection, exhibition, place, or audience relevance; then balance literal connections with a smaller group of visually adjacent discoveries.

Start with the institutional connection

Write down the reasons a visitor enters the store. They may be extending an exhibition visit, looking for an educational gift, remembering a trip, or finding an affordable connection to an artist or subject. Each reason suggests a different assortment role.

  • Collection connection: artists, periods, regions, or subjects represented by the institution.
  • Exhibition connection: a focused temporary story that may need a planned end date.
  • Place connection: architecture, landscape, natural history, or cultural material relevant to the location.
  • Audience connection: designs suited to educators, families, specialists, tourists, or design-focused visitors.

Use three assortment layers

Layer Purpose Example
Direct Immediate connection to the collection or program An artist, scientific subject, or historical period visitors just encountered
Adjacent Broadens the visual story without losing relevance Related color, geography, technique, or era
Discovery Adds surprise and tests a new customer interest A less familiar work with a strong staff story
Organized art print bins suitable for a museum store retail counter
Clear dividers and short subject labels help visitors connect the print assortment to what they experienced.

Make context visible

A short label can turn an unfamiliar image into a meaningful object. Use verified, concise context: artist, title, date or period, and the specific reason the work connects to the store's story. Do not overload the display with wall text; give staff or a nearby reference card a deeper version.

Balance mission and giftability

Mission relevance does not remove ordinary retail questions. Customers still consider size, price, color, portability, and whether the recipient will understand the image. Include approachable supporting pieces around the most scholarly or visually demanding anchors.

Plan for exhibition transitions

Separate durable collection-linked stock from time-sensitive exhibition stock. Give the temporary group a review date well before the exhibition closes. Decide which remaining designs can move into the core assortment and which should not be reordered.

Measure the assortment

  • Track units sold by design and display location.
  • Record whether the sale was linked to an exhibition, program, or season.
  • Ask staff which stories repeatedly prompt interest.
  • Distinguish an unavailable design from a design that was displayed and did not sell.
  • Reorder proven connections while keeping a small discovery allocation.
