JPG or PDF for Printable Wall Art?

Use the supplied file that matches the print provider’s requirements and the output you intend. A JPG is often a straightforward image upload; a supplied PDF can be useful when the document’s page layout is part of the job. Neither extension guarantees more detail, a correct crop, or the right printed size.

Check the package before choosing a format

RPS packages are not identical. The French Fashion digital download lists several JPG ratio families and a print-ready PDF. The Wyoming Map digital download lists a master JPG and a more focused set of printable proportions; its included-file list does not promise a PDF. Read the current listing for the exact product you purchase.

If a PDF is not supplied, it is not automatically missing. The JPG may be the intended print file. Conversely, the presence of a PDF does not mean it is the best choice for every frame, paper or upload service.

For JPG: match the image to the output

Confirm the selected file’s orientation and proportions, then inspect the service’s crop preview at your chosen size. An 8 × 10 inch frame is 4:5; a 12 × 18 inch output is 2:3. Using a different ratio requires an intentional crop or border. The aspect-ratio guide covers that decision.

Next check pixel dimensions against the intended output and the provider’s requirements. A large-looking preview on a monitor does not establish printable detail. Send the original chosen download rather than a screenshot or repeatedly exported working copy.

For PDF: check both the page and the image

Look at the PDF’s page dimensions as well as the artwork within the page. A document can include a white margin that you intend to keep; scaling the whole page to different paper can change the size of the artwork inside it.

Adobe’s Acrobat page-sizing guidance explains that Fit scales a page to the printable area, while Actual size prints without scaling and may crop content that does not fit. Check the preview instead of treating either setting as universally correct.

If a file is meant to produce a particular measured opening, make a test and measure it. Confirm the paper and printer margins before committing to a finished print. A PDF can still contain a low-detail image; its document wrapper does not create detail that was absent from the source.

1. Does the printer specify one format? Follow that requirement using an appropriate supplied file.
2. Do you need a particular supplied page layout? Check that PDF’s dimensions, margins and print scaling.
3. Are you uploading a single image to a chosen print size? Check the matching JPG and its crop preview.
4. Is neither supplied version suitable? Ask the seller or printer about preparation before converting and ordering.
