The short answer: buy wholesale art prints around a real store plan, not a long list of images you like. Define the customer, count the display positions, give every design a role, verify current product and ordering details, and decide how you will measure the test before placing the order.

Two useful planning references sit behind this guide: Shopify's assortment-planning overview separates the product-mix decision from the financial plan that supports it, while Faire's retailer explanation of wholesale minimums distinguishes unit minimums from brand-level order minimums. The current product listing and buyer account remain the authority for the values that apply to a real order.

1. Define the job the prints will do

Start with one sentence: “These prints will help this customer choose art for this use in this part of the store.” A museum store may build around a collection or visitor story. A bookstore may emphasize illustration, maps, reading, or visual culture. A home store may need pieces that coordinate with a material or color edit.

If the sentence could describe every store, it is not yet a buying brief. Record the intended customer, the selling zone, two or three subject or style groups, a floor date, and the amount of protected storage.

2. Measure the display before choosing designs

Count what shoppers can actually see and browse:

  • front-facing wall, shelf, or tabletop positions;
  • clearly labeled bin or divider sections;
  • the largest packaged size each fixture can hold;
  • portrait and landscape capacity; and
  • protected back-stock space.

A twelve-position display does not automatically need dozens of designs. It needs enough useful difference to make the story clear without hiding the inventory. Use the deeper guide on how many art print designs a small store should test when you are ready to size the first assortment.

3. Give every design an assortment role

Role What it should do Question to ask
Anchor Earn attention and explain the theme Can a shopper understand the group from several feet away?
Companion Make the anchor easier to buy or gift Does it deepen the same story without repeating it?
Contrast Add a useful difference in color, orientation, scale, or subject Does the difference help the display rather than fragment it?
Test Answer one specific buying question What evidence will decide whether it stays?

For example, a literary or education-focused store might use Girl Reading by Walter Tiemann as a clear story anchor. A design-led store could use Édouard Bénédictus's colorful Art Deco pattern to add graphic color. A travel or history edit might test a coordinated vintage map gallery-wall set. These are planning examples, not a universal assortment; each current listing remains the source of truth for available formats.

Six RPS catalog artworks form an assortment of vintage posters, butterfly studies, floral pattern and sunflower art.
Compare a small assortment together so you can assess variety, shared colors and how the designs would sit on one display.

4. Check physical fit, not only visual fit

For each candidate, confirm the current size choices, orientation, package format, and fixture compatibility. A good image can still be wrong for the planned display if the package is too large, the orientation creates dead space, or the store cannot protect back stock.

Use a simple worksheet with one row per design: role, orientation, visible position, back-stock location, and current order quantity. This exposes duplicate roles and inventory with nowhere to go.

5. Verify commercial details in the current channel

Do not use an evergreen article as the source of truth for price, case quantity, order minimum, availability, delivery estimate, promotion, return policy, or payment terms. Check those details in the ordering channel when the cart is ready.

A product-level minimum order quantity and a brand-level order-value minimum are different constraints. That distinction matters because a cart can satisfy one and still fail the other. Use the current listing and account view for the values that apply to your order.

Before committing, work through the existing wholesale art-print supplier questions for materials, packaging, size consistency, communication, damage handling, and reorder fit.

6. Choose the ordering path that fits the business

Rock Paper Scissors currently offers two wholesale pathways: approved direct trade access and its Faire storefront. The wholesale overview explains the current routes. Use the direct application when a tailored account conversation is useful, or keep the existing Faire workflow when that is where the team already manages wholesale purchasing. The current account or marketplace screen—not this article—governs prices, eligibility, and terms.

If you use Faire, build a reviewable shortlist before checkout. The guide to building a wholesale buying shortlist on Faire shows how to separate discovery from selection and remove designs without a clear role.

7. Plan receiving and the first review before ordering

Write down who will receive the shipment, where it will be checked, how damage or count differences will be documented, and when the merchandise should reach the floor. Then choose a review date and the evidence you will collect:

  • days and positions each design was visible;
  • units sold and units remaining;
  • customer and staff questions;
  • display or packaging problems; and
  • which roles deserve replenishment, rotation, or retirement.

The first wholesale art-print order checklist covers the receiving handoff in more detail.

A worked six-position shortlist

Imagine a store has six front-facing positions, one portrait-friendly bin, and protected space for a small reserve. The buyer could choose one clear anchor for each of two customer stories, two companions that make those stories easier to browse, one orientation contrast, and one deliberate test. The buyer should not add a seventh design until it has a visible position or replaces a weaker role.

After selecting candidates, apply current product costs and minimums, then protect some buying capacity for the first reorder. Keep the product-mix decision and the financial plan connected, but do not let one substitute for the other.

Final checklist before placing the order

  • The customer and store story are specific.
  • Every design has a visible role and physical position.
  • Orientation, package size, and storage fit the fixture.
  • Current product, minimum, availability, delivery, and account details were checked.
  • The receiving owner and floor date are recorded.
  • The first review date and reorder evidence are defined.
  • The order leaves room to respond to what actually sells.
