Your First Wholesale Art Print Order: A Retail Buyer Checklist

By Rock Paper Scissors

A practical first-order checklist for independent retailers: define the display, choose a focused mix, confirm current terms, plan receiving, and set a review date.

The short answer: place a first wholesale art print order only after you know where the prints will live, how customers will browse them, and what you want to learn. A useful first order is a controlled store test—not a miniature version of the supplier's entire catalog.

Before you shop: define the test

Start with one display zone and one customer story. Measure the usable wall, shelf, table, or print-bin space. Count the positions customers can actually see. Then write one sentence that describes the buyer: for example, “a museum visitor looking for an educational gift under the store's core gift price,” or “a plant-shop customer who likes botanical and natural-history imagery.”

This gives every item in the opening order a job. If a print does not fit the customer, the display, or the test, leave it for the next round.

The first-order checklist

  1. Measure the fixture. Record front-facing positions, bin depth, wall width, and back-stock capacity.
  2. Choose two or three themes. Keep each theme literal enough for staff and customers to name quickly.
  3. Pick an anchor for each theme. The anchor earns attention; supporting designs make the group shoppable.
  4. Confirm current channel details. Check wholesale price, minimums, sizes, availability, lead time, and terms in the ordering channel.
  5. Plan the receipt. Decide who will count, inspect, price, and place the shipment.
  6. Set a review date. Choose a date to assess sell-through, placement, and customer response before the order arrives.

Build a coherent mix, not a random sampler

Variety helps only when the display still reads as intentional. A nature group might combine butterflies, birds, and botanical studies. A graphic group might combine diagrams, typography, and strong geometric color. Within the group, vary scale, value, and orientation so the pieces do not look interchangeable.

Adonis, or Bright-blue Butterfly, by George Shaw
A blue butterfly print can anchor a nature group; supporting pieces should extend the story without repeating the same image.

Confirm live details before checkout

A blog article should not be the source of truth for current wholesale pricing, minimums, inventory, delivery estimates, promotions, or payment terms. Check those details in Faire when you build the cart. Faire states that eligible retailers may receive payment terms and opening-order protections, while new-retailer referral offers depend on eligibility and the current sign-up flow.

If a size or packaging detail matters to your fixture, ask before ordering. A beautiful assortment still fails if the packages do not fit the bin or staff cannot identify the size quickly.

Write the receiving plan now

  • Count cartons before opening them.
  • Match quantities and sizes to the packing record.
  • Inspect corners, sleeves, backing, and print surfaces.
  • Photograph shipping damage before discarding packaging.
  • Price and label consistently before the prints reach the floor.
  • Record the display date and starting quantity by design.

Measure the test fairly

Do not judge only by units sold. Record where each design appeared, how long it was visible, and whether it was framed, front-facing, or buried in a bin. Note repeated customer questions. A hidden print and an eye-level anchor have not received the same test.

At the review date, replenish clear winners, rotate under-tested designs, and retire weak pieces gradually. Keep the story coherent while making evidence-based changes.
