How Many Art Print Designs Should a Small Store Test?

Choose a sensible number of art print designs by counting visible positions, theme groups, and back-stock capacity instead of copying another store's assortment.

Article guide

In this article

  1. Start by counting visible positions
  2. Use two or three theme groups
  3. A simple starting calculation
  4. Avoid false variety
  5. Give each design a fair test
  6. Build a display-sized shortlist

The short answer: test the number of designs your display can show fairly. For many compact zones, that means one design per visible wall or divider position, plus limited back stock—not every design the supplier offers. The right number comes from fixture capacity and theme clarity.

Start by counting visible positions

A gallery wall with nine frames can test about nine front-facing designs. A bin with six labeled dividers can support six clearly browsable groups, but each group may hold several designs. A tabletop fixture may show only three or four designs without looking crowded.

Count what a customer can understand without rearranging the entire display. Hidden inventory is not additional selling capacity.

Use two or three theme groups

Divide the positions into small, literal stories. A nine-position wall might use three groups of three: natural history, graphic color, and figurative illustration. A six-divider bin might dedicate two dividers to botanicals, two to birds and animals, and two to design or architecture.

Within each group, vary the visual role:

  • Anchor: the piece that stops the eye
  • Companion: a design that makes the anchor easier to place or gift
  • Contrast: a related piece with different color, scale, or orientation

A strong figurative bird image can act as an anchor; quieter nature studies can support it without duplicating the composition.

A simple starting calculation

Use this planning sequence:

  1. Count front-facing positions.
  2. Add the number of clearly labeled browse positions.
  3. Subtract positions needed for signs, frames, or non-art products.
  4. Assign the remaining positions across two or three themes.
  5. Order back stock only where storage and expected replenishment justify it.

If the calculation produces twelve meaningful positions, start near twelve designs rather than forty. Expansion is easier after you know which theme and size combination customers choose.

Avoid false variety

Twenty near-identical botanicals may be more repetitive than six well-related pieces with different visual roles. Conversely, one botanical, one map, one abstract, one portrait, and one novelty print may feel random rather than varied. Variety should give customers different ways into a recognizable store point of view.

Give each design a fair test

  • Record start quantity and display date.
  • Keep the design visible for a meaningful period.
  • Rotate comparable positions rather than moving everything at once.
  • Note customer questions and staff recommendations.
  • Review sell-through by design, theme, size, and placement.

Add new designs when the current display has earned the space: a theme sells through, customers request more options, or a seasonal story needs a controlled change. Do not add designs only because the catalog is large.

Build a display-sized shortlist

Browse our current Faire assortment and save only the designs that have a clear theme, position, and test plan in your store.
